One night, during SOD ER duty, Khat and I were pondering on what we got ourselves into. Why were we putting ourselves through the trouble and difficulties of med school when we had the option of already establishing our careers, starting a family and becoming independent. The challenges of med school do not end with med school. There’s still residency, fellowship all while establishing your name as a pioneer and forefront physician in your chosen field.
We didn’t really get much with our conversation. We just ended up laughing at ourselves and making fun of the situation we’re in. This is what we wanted. This is what we decided to pursue way before. The decision was not made on a whim. So every trying moment that comes along your way is easier to bear if you laugh through it, not forgetting a simple guiding principle in Medicine, that the patient’s life is in your hands, may it be a simple complaint of URTI to the more daunting trauma, cancers and MI.
As for the future, there’s always room for other pursuits like family and travel if you make time for it. Choosing a lighter specialty will definitely ease time management, but it really is all up to you and what you make of every moment and opportunity given to you.
In the end, we decided that after the med boards, we are just going to be housewives and start our own show, Housewife MD. :p
